The word of God divides the soul and spirit very particularly. We read in Hebrew 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit…” Again in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” When we follow the scriptures we see a clear revelation of these things.
The Soul
In the bible man is spoken of as being a soul and having a soul; which are emphasis of different aspects of the same thing. When God formed man’s body of the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life man became a living soul (Gen.2:7, 1 Cor.15:45). The soul cleaves unto the body which is of the dust (Gen.3:19- "dust thou art" Ps.119:25 "my soul cleaveth unto the dust" Ps. 44:25 "our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth") and abides in the body as a hand fits into a glove; both having the same shape. The soul contains the whole man (Psalm 103:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me) including the mind, sight, hearing, speaking, tasting, the spirit, heart and understanding (2 Pet.2:8…in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;). It appears the soul is concerned predominantly with and motivated by external things (connected to the eyes). The body is a temple or tabernacle for the soul and spirit in the earth.
Paul acknowledged that full consciousness exists ‘out of the body’ (2 Cor.12: 1-4). Jesus indicated such to the thief before their deaths that not only was consciousness realized but interaction with others was likewise to be expected. (Luke 23:42-3) Paul also indicated for a Christian that interaction with Jesus himself was to be expected, stating "…our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him." 1 Thes. 5:9-10 Not only was this expected but desired. Notice Philip. 1:21-23 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. [22] But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. [23] For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: 1 Kings17:21-22 When the widows son died, Elijah prayed 'let this CHILD'S SOUL come into him again'. The 'him' was referring to his body. And so the child’s soul LEFT, and then CAME into him again. In death the soul departs. Genesis 35:18 "And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died)" Psalm 90:10 says at death "we fly away". Maybe as Lazarus we will be "carried by the angels" (Lk.16:22). However we go, we depart to be with Christ (Phil.1:23) who is at the right hand of God in heaven (1 Peter3:22) Regardless, they will be with Christ before the resurrection of their bodies, notice 1 Thes. 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God BRING WITH HIM. They must be with him if he brings them. Paul was confident to be absent from the body in death and present with the Lord; not only confident but willing rather (2 Cor.5:8). In Rev.20:4 the souls of those that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God are resurrected. In Rev. 6:9-11 I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: [10] And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? [11] And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled. Their souls wore clothes (which would make sense if you believe they were naked as indicated in Eccles. 5:15---As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came) They had memory, could rest, communicate with God, had emotion, could cry in a "loud voice"; very similar to the account given by Jesus in Luke 16:19-31. The full spectrum of senses is located in the soul as revealed in the story of Lazarus. The soul was carried by angels (v22). The soul had eyes (v23), had a tongue (v24), could speak (v24-31), hands (v24), had memory (v25), had limitations of movement (v26), could be comforted or tormented (v25), had the ability to drink some form of water (v24), could sense cool and heat (v24). Their souls appear as their bodies with bodily functions, insomuch that Paul could say "whether in the body or out of the body I cannot tell" (2 Cor.12: 1-4). This is man as a living soul.
People are spoken of as souls:
Genesis 46:18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls. v22 These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen.
v25-27 These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven. [26] All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; [27] And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.
Joshua 10:39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining:
Joshua 11:11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
The man spoken of as being a soul existing in the body had the ability of the body:
Lev.5:2- Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast…
Lev.7:20- But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice…
Lev.17:12- Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood…
Lev.22:11- But if the priest buy any soul with his money… (speaking of a servant)
Lev.23:30- And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.
The soul has desires for things of the body; this is the man having a soul, or the functions of his soul:
Deut.12:15- …thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after…
v20- …will eat flesh, because thy soul longeth to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
Deut.14:26- And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,
Prov.6:30- Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
Prov.25:25- As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
Prov.27:7- The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Lam.1:19- …while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.
Even fasting from food humbles, chastens and afflicts the soul- (Psa.35:13, 69:10, Isa.58:5).
The soul is spoken of using terms related to the body:
Isaiah 29:8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
Isaiah 32:6 ... to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
Psalm 42:1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
Psalm 42:2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
Psalm 143:6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
Lament. 1:11 All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O Lord, and consider; for I am become vile. v16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. (also v19)
Prov. 13:19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.
Prov. 16:24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
Prov. 27:7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Psalm 107:9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
Isaiah 58:10-11 ...satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: [11] And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones...
The soul of man not only has to do with the things of the body but with relationships with other people and with the things of creation and the external world.
Soul has love and affection towards others:
Genesis 34:3, 8 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel…And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
Deut. 6:5 (also 10:12, 11:13, 13:3, 30:6) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Deut. 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul…
1 Samuel 18:1, 3 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul…Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

The soul pities and has compassion, grace and mercy. Since the soul sees with the eyes, the eye is spoken of as pitying:
Ezekiel 24:21…the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.
Deut. 7:16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
Deut. 13:8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
Deut. 19:13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
Deut. 19:21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying. Remember James 2:13…mercy rejoiceth against judgment. (soul against spirit)
Isaiah 13:18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.
Jeremiah 13:14 (also 21:7) … I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
Ezk.7:3-4 Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

2 Cor. 7:7 …he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
2 Cor. 7:11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal…
1 Thes. 2:17…endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
The lust/desire of the eyes is a temptation directly of the soul:
Ezekiel 24:16, 21 Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke… Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth;
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Eccles. 2:10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them…
The soul interacts with and responds to external things a number of ways:
1 Samuel 1:10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.
Job 7:11 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Job 10:1 My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
Psalm 94:17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
Psalm 34:2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
Psalm 25:1 Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
Psalm 86:4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

Psalm 123:4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.
Leviticus 16:31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.
Isaiah 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul?
Psalm 141:8 But mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

The mind appears to be in the soul:
There is wisdom and knowledge in the soul which links it to the mind.
Proverbs 2:10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
Proverbs 3:21-22 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: [22] So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
Proverbs 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul:
Proverbs 19:2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good;
Proverbs 24:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul:
Rev. 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom.

Memory is in the mind and soul
Lament. 3:20-21 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. [21] This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
To remember is to ‘call to mind’- Isaiah 46:8 Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors. Isaiah 65:17…the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Psalm 103:2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Psalm 31:12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind:
Comparing these two verses we see a link between the mind and soul:
Ezekiel 24:21 Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.
Ezekiel 24:25 Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,
We see further that the mind is located in the head:
Eccles. 2:14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness:
Daniel 2:28 Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
Daniel 4:5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Daniel 7:15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. (v28) As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.
God condemns a mans mind/head and heart.
Isaiah 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
2 Cor. 3:14 But their minds were blinded:
2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…
Hebrews 10:16 …I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Titus 1:15 …unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
(The heart is in the breast area- Exodus 28:29-30 And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.[30] And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.)
The spirit through the heart (out of it are the issues of life- Prv.4:23) quickens the mind of man:
Ephes. 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
2 Cor. 7:7…your fervent mind toward me; (The spirit is analogous with fire- Prv.20:27, Psa.39:3, Ezek.3:14)
Romans 12:2 :but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…
Being in the head and connected with the soul and the eyes the mind collects information from the senses and analyzes it with wisdom; ‘the mind that hath wisdom’.
Judges 19:30…consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
1 Samuel 9:20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found…
2 Samuel 17:8 For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

So the mind uses wisdom analyzing information until it fits into the understanding of the heart. The mind can be defiled by the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life;

Titus 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

The Spirit of Man
The spirit is the life of a man; it is what animates his body and soul, heart and mind. It is also the ‘will to live’. The soul would manifest desire where the spirit would manifest diligence or drive.
At death the spirit departs from the body.
Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Job 32:8 …there is a spirit in man:
Daniel 7:15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body…
James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Zech. 12:1 …saith the Lord, which …formeth the spirit of man within him.
1 Cor. 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him…
Eccles. 11:5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: (Luke 24:39 … for a spirit hath not flesh and bones…)

At death the spirit comes up out of a man, and he is said to give up the ghost (perhaps through the nostrils):

The spirit of man is what motivates him, what sustains him, what gives him his drive:
Matthew 26:41 …the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Mark 14:38 The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

Luke 2:40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit…
Acts 17:16 …his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
Acts 18:5 ...Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

When a person is overwhelmed, wounded or sad in spirit, they lose their motivation or they lose spirit:

Psalm 143:4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.

The spirit is analogous to fire:
Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Isaiah 4:4 …by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
Ezekiel 3:14… and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit;
Fervent means heat (2 Peter 3:10 and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up), and so we find in Acts 18:25 …fervent in the spirit…and again Romans 12:11 …fervent in spirit…
Deut. 19:6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him…
Psalm 39:3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue, (Job 32:8, 18-19 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding…For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.)
Anger, indignation and jealousy are produced by the spirit and are associated with fire:
Prov. 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
Prov. 14:29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. Ecc.7:9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry:
Exodus 32:19 …Moses' anger waxed hot…
Deut. 9:19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you...
Numbers 5:14 And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:
Deut. 4:24 For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
Deut. 6:15 (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Jeremiah 51:11 Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.
Ezk.7:3-4 Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
The anger, and jealousy from the spirit would come from the conscience, which is of the heart; and an understanding of good and evil. The heart is the real you, the final will with man (see below). The heart is in the spirit (Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit… also compare Dt.29:4 w/ Mk.2:8) which is why they are closely associated in many passages:
Exodus 35:21...every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing…
Deut. 2:30...hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate…
Joshua 5:1… their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Psalm 77:6 …I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
Psalm 143:4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.
Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Isaiah 57:15…with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Isaiah 65:14...ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

So then judgment is in the spirit from the heart which is where the conscience is.

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The mind being persuaded in a certain thing can effect the conscience. A man can sin by having doubt, while the thing in question is not a sin before God.
1 Cor.8:7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
1 Cor.8:10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
1Cor.10:25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
Heb.9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Repentance is the mind being persuaded, and faith is the heart believing.
Rom.14:5 Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
Luke 16:30-1 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The heart is in the breast area (and is in the spirit)- Exodus 28:29-30 And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.[30] And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.)
The understanding is in the heart, and is necessary for judgment:
Exodus 36:1...every wise hearted man, in whom the Lord put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the Lord had commanded.
1 Kings 3:9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
1 Kings 3:11-12 … but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; [12] Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart;
Job 20:3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.
Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

So then the conscience is what gives men an understanding of right and wrong; a sense of responsibility and duty, a sense of judgment and justice. Understanding itself appears to be wisdom related to the knowledge of God and the conscience (see above also); the ability to apply God’s revelation to everything; assimilating every thought into a worldview. Or in other words fitting smaller truths within a broader framework. If we think of a puzzle, the pieces are knowledge, we use wisdom to put the pieces in the correct positions, and when we begin to see the picture, we have understanding.
Prov.9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Deut.4:6 Keep therefore and do them (the commandments); for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
Deut.32:28 For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.
1 Chron.22:12 Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel , that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God.

Understanding is the ability to explain information correctly, where knowledge allows simply to repeat information. Understanding is used as interpreting or expounding also:
Gen 42:23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spoke unto them by an interpreter.
Neh.8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
Psa 81:5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt : where I heard a language that I understood not.
Psa 106:7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt ; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea .
1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken?
Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. And so wisdom uses and makes judgment with knowledge according to the understanding. Again like the puzzle analogy, understanding is the picture, knowledge is the pieces, and wisdom discerns which pieces fit in which places based upon the picture.
Prov.15:2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: (v7) The lips of the wise disperse knowledge:
Prov.13:16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge:
Exodus 36:1...every wise hearted man, in whom the Lord put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the Lord had commanded.
Wisdom would be understood today to be logic, math, geometry etc. self verifying (axiomatic) principles. We see men applying these principles to work in certain materials on the tabernacle and temple.
Exod.31:3-5 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.
Exod.35:31-5 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work. And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.
1Ki 7:14 …a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass.
Pro 8:12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
Ecc 10:10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

Pro 8:1-4 Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
A mans spirit must be controlled.
Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Proverbs 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
1 Cor. 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
This rule will be seen in terms of not speaking or acting out at the wrong time, or excessively, or the wrong things.
Proverbs 11:13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
Proverbs 14:29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

[55] But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. [56] For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
Isaiah 29:24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding…
Anger rests on the edge of sin and must be controlled diligently.
Ephes. 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Eccles. 7:8-9...the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. [9] Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
Proverbs 14:17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly:
Proverbs 29:22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
James 1:19-20 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
Isaiah 16:6 We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.
Proverbs 21:24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
Proverbs 12:16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.
Pride is from an unruly spirit (the proud in spirit Eccles. 7:8). Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Isaiah 9:9…the pride and stoutness of heart…
Jeremiah 48:29 We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.
One who is self willed, and presumptuous:
Job 33:17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
Psalm 131:1 Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
1 Tim. 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
2 Peter 2:10 But chiefly them that…despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled…
Proverbs 16:19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
Philip. 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Jeremiah 44:10 They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes...

A spirit that is ruled well is a meek and quiet and humble spirit:
1Pet.3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. (v1 ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands;)
Prov.16:19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Prov. 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
Eccles. 7:8-9...the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. (Notice patience is contrasted with pride; again the man that is hasty or impatient is proud and self willed) [9] Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
A spirit that is humble and quiet is not purposed upon seeking to exalt one’s self. Rather is a poor and broken spirit:
Isa.66:2 …but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Matt.5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Psalm 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 51:9-10 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (v17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

The heart is the real you, the ‘I am’, the final will in the counsels of the soul and mind, spirit and conscience.

When a person experiences anything, their mind is gathering information through the senses. The heart and mind both analyze the information with thoughts and intentions provided by the conscience, soul and spirit and body. The heart, containing the final will of the person also prompts the mind to think and remember:

Analogically we can think of the body like the temple of God. The body is said to be the temple of the Holy Ghost for the believer (1 Cor.6:19). Psalm 96:6 states that “strength and beauty are in his sanctuary”. We can think of the spirit as strength and the soul as beauty. Strength and beauty characterize men and women, and we find in the scriptures that the soul is spoken of in the feminine while the spirit in masculine terms.
The soul is female:
Psalm 34:2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD:
Jer.12:7 …I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. (darling- cherished or loved [see Eph.5:29] very much; pleasing or attractive. love as a function of the soul- see above)
Psa 35:17… rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.
The spirit and the heart in the spirit is male:

Joshua 5:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. Although some men are spoken of as beautiful, and the scriptures mention the ‘beauty of a man’ (Isa.44:13, 2 Sam.14:25, 1 Sam.16:12) it is self evident that woman are more beautiful than men (numerous beauty contests). Also the scriptures associate beauty with women more often.
Gen 12:11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:
Gen 29:17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favored.
Est 1:11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.

Beauty appeals to the eyes and thus the soul. A beautiful person is usually favoured over others because of the desire to look upon beauty, the desire of the eyes; it is pleasurable and delightful to admire their beauty. And ultimately God made man male and female in his image to manifest his mercy and truth. His goodness and severity, his beauty and strength, his law and grace, his nurture and admonition, his righteousness and peace. Not only has he made man and woman to represent these attributes of his nature, but also he made every man and woman with a soul and spirit. The mother and father in their respective positions in the home reveal to a child the nature of God the Father. The honor belonging to a father and mother is not just a child’s duty to man to display but a child’s duty to God. Likewise parents must take very seriously their representation of the nature of God in their roles as parents so as not to corrupt the understanding of the child.
Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Deu 27:16 Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.
Mat 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
The distinction between male and female is to be made even in the putting on of apparel, and length of hair.
Deu 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.
1 Cor. 11:14-5 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
And so when we read “the head of the woman is the man” and again “as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing” (1 Cor.11:3, Eph.5:24), we should also understand that the soul should be led and directed by the spirit with understanding. When the scripture saith “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;” and again “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:” (Eph.5:25, 28-9), we should also understand the spirit should motivate the soul and develop it in its beautiful nature created by God. The spirit should carve out the banks for the soul to flow as a river. The spirit should break up the ground and water the soul so that it will develop into a beautiful plant and “her own works praise her in the gates”. The woman is to be protected by the man (Num.30:4-16).
This is the nature of the ‘husband’. A husband is a steward of the house; husbandry is stewardship of land in farming with beasts of burden. We find God placing the first man in a garden to ‘dress it and keep it’ Gen. 2:15. We see that Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard- Gen.9:20. The husbandman would keep the cattle (Zec.13:5), the wheat and barley (Joel 1:11), the vineyards (Mt.21:33, Jn.15:1). The Lord shows himself a husbandman waiting for the precious fruit of the earth (Ja.5:7). Indeed “The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.” (2 Tim.2:6).
When the bible admonishes “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression” (1 Tim.2:12-14) we can likewise understand that the soul must not guide and instruct the spirit else the man will be deceived. His desires and longings if not kept in check by the conscience will overflow its banks and trespass. His soul’s great longings must be restrained by a right spirit.
